A picture is worth a thousand words: An image can be as descriptive as a lot of text.

This phrase is the invention of American author Frederick R. Barnard, who wrote on the effectiveness of graphics in advertising. He claimed that the saying was Chinese, and it led to the popular belief that it was coined by Confucius. However, this turned out to be complete invention.
